Genus of about 1100 species deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs and climbers, found in tropical to warm-temperate regions of Central and South America, Kenya, S. Africa, Polynesia, and Australia. Acacias are spreading, prickly shrubs up to 2-3 m high. Small elliptical phyllodes to 3 cm with undulate margins. Stems with stiff spines. Flowers in yellow balls.Acacia armata (Kangaroo Thorn or Wattle) is the best known type, growing about 3-4 ft high.
Average warmth. Keep fairly cool in winter (50F or 10C). Provide as much light as possible. Grow in soil-based potting mix.
Water freely from spring to autumn - sparingly in winter. Misting is not necessary.
Take semi-ripe (not woody) cuttings in summer. Seeds sown in spring at 70F germinate quickly.
