Genus of 19 species of woody-based perennials and shrubs from a variety of habitats in South Africa. The Anisodontea (African Mallow, Cape Mallow) is one of the undiscovered treasures of the plant world. Its vivid pink, 1 in blooms, each set off by a deep cranberry eye, are borne in amazing profusion all over the plant. They are framed by delicate foliage of a soft pale green that is the perfect contrast for the flowers. Anisodonteas are vigorous growers, which has allowed us to form them into strapping. White to deep magenta flowers with a dark spot on the base grace this group of evergreen plants and low shrubs from South Africa. Leaves are heart-shaped or lobed. Water during the growing and blooming seasons and less at other times. Sometimes sold as Malvastrum.Plants are easily overwintered in a sunny window, where they will continue to provide cheerful pink blooms.
Average warmth in summer - minimum 55F in winter.Brightly lit spot. Keep well away from direct sunlight. Grow in soil-based potting mix.
Keep compost moist at all times but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter. Use soft, tepid water.
Take stem cuttings in spring. Sow seed at 55-64 F (13-18 C) in spring.
